Sydney Carton sacrifices for Lucie


    Finally, Sydney Carton finds something to do for Lucie, which costs his life. Charles is caught, put into prison and sentenced to death. Since Carton and Charles look alike, Carton decides to take the place for Charles and dies for him. He wants to keep his promise to Lucie that he will keep the people she loves around her. He thinks Charles is not worth dying and he wants to die for him. He knows that his death will make Lucie’s family be together. Thus, he is not scared to sacrifice his life for saving her love Lucie’s husband. He is a great man because he can do and he will do anything for his love. He regards his death as the most valuable thing that he has ever done because it makes him keep the promise with Lucie. He thinks that “it is far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” He is tired of his life, and he eventually finds something valuable to end his life.

Carton the sad man


     Sydney Carton goes to visit Charles and Lucie right after their honeymoon. He wants the friendship with Charles. He has a talk with Charles. After he leaves, Charles considers him as a careless and reckless man. However, Lucie tells Charles that Carton is a good man but it is just his heart is wounded. Indeed, Carton is a sad man. He cannot find anything important to him except Lucie. The value of his life is just Lucie. He wants to do something for Lucie and what he can do is to make friends with the one Lucie loves, her husband, Charles. He comes to visit the couple as soon as they back from their shows how much he cares about Lucie. He cares Lucie more than he cares about himself which causes Lucie to have the feeling of sympathy on him. He drinks because he cannot find any value. He finally finds something he cares is Lucie. He is truly a sad man.

Carton loves Lucie


Sydney Carton finds out that there is someone he cares, Lucie Manatte. He finds that the life that he cares no one and no one cares about him has been ended since he sees Lucie. He cares about Lucie more than anything. He knows that he loves Lucie. His life is not worthless any more. He finally goes up to Lucie and has a talk with her. He tells Lucie how much he cares about her. However, Carton tells Lucie that he doesn’t want anything back from her because he thinks it doesn’t worth to do so. He just wants to give everything to her. He tells Lucie that he cannot do anything better about his life, but Lucie convinces him that he can live a better life and find a value of himself. Sydney Carton considers Lucie as his last dream of his sole and tells Lucie that he will do anything for her no matter what even it costs his life. He will keep the people Lucie loves around her. He makes the promise to Lucie and then leaves her.

Sydney Carton cares about nothing

     Sydney Carton is tired of himself and his life, and he is tired of everything because he cannot find any value of himself. He works with Mr. Stryver and he does all the work even though he is just an assistant. He doesn’t care whether he is actually doing the work for Mr. Stryver since he doesn’t care about anything. He said that "I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and not man on earth cares for me."
     He feels regret about himself everyday and he finds himself worthless on the earth until he sees Darnay. They look alike but they are just so different. he asked Darnay that if he thinks they look particularly alike. It seems that Carton wants to live like Darnay. He doesn't want to live the way he is living. He wants to change, but he just doesn't know how to change. He finds Darnay who has set a great example for him, which makes him find the thing has fallen away from. However, he is still struggling. He doesn't know what he should do.
